Assam to Recruit 20,000 New Police Staff and Promote 5,000, Announces Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assams Chief Minister announces recruitment of 20,000 police staff and promotions for 5,000 to enhance law enforcement.

Guwahati, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took a significant step on Thursday to bolster the state’s policing infrastructure. He announced plans to recruit between 15,000 and 20,000 new police personnel and promote approximately 5,000 existing officers.

Speaking to reporters after a two-day conference with senior police officials, Sarma emphasized that maintaining law and order remains a top priority for the government. He instructed police leadership to ensure that Assam’s security framework remains intact under all circumstances.

Sarma highlighted that the state’s conviction rate has seen considerable improvement, rising from around 8 percent in 2020 to 29.30 percent today. He attributed this progress partly to the timely filing of charge sheets, with the government aiming for a conviction rate of 35 percent.

Additionally, the Chief Minister announced the formation of two new police battalions. One will focus on disaster management, while the other will cater to the security needs of Oil India and ONGC installations. The government is also working to expedite the promotion process within the force, expecting around 5,000 officers to receive promotions soon.

The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy will undergo upgrades to achieve national-level status, addressing the evolving needs of modern policing. The government plans to significantly expand housing for police personnel, increasing the current number of homes from about 10,000 to 30,000 for nearly 90,000 officers.

In a bid to combat drug trafficking, Sarma announced plans to establish an Anti-Narcotics Task Force within a month. This proposed force will also investigate economic crimes related to drug trafficking.

The government intends to pursue stringent penalties for drug dealers and initiate procedures to seize assets linked to drug trafficking. Sarma stated that the decisions made during the police conference would be implemented within six months, with the next conference for police superintendents scheduled for February in Bongaigaon.
