Nepal Announces Two-Day Weekend to Tackle Energy Crisis

Kathmandu, April 5: Amid the ongoing fuel crisis in West Asia, Nepal has joined the list of countries seeking solutions. The government has reduced the working week for public offices and educational institutions from six days to five.

Previously, Saturday was the only day off in the Himalayan nation.

Various media outlets in Nepal reported this decision, citing government spokesperson and Education Minister Shashmit Pokhrel. He informed journalists that the decision made during the council of ministers meeting on Sunday (April 5) will take effect from Chaitra 23 (April 6). The government has decided to grant public holidays on both Saturday and Sunday, implementing a two-day weekend starting this week.

Pokhrel stated, “Given the current difficulties caused by fuel supply issues, government and educational institutions will remain closed for two days.”

The operating hours for government offices have been adjusted. They will now function from Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. However, these new hours will not apply to educational institutions. The government aims to address the challenges posed by the irregular supply of petroleum products in the country.

Earlier, another neighboring country, Sri Lanka, had announced a similar initiative to conserve fuel. The Sri Lankan government decided to close government offices, schools, and universities every Wednesday as a precautionary measure, aimed at energy conservation and managing limited resources. Additionally, to combat fuel black market activities, the government implemented a QR-code-based fuel rationing system.

On March 17, the Sri Lankan government announced that most schools and offices would remain closed for four days a week.
