Neha Singh Rathore Backs UGC Equality Rules, Urges Critics to Be Open-Minded

Lucknow: Bhojpuri folk singer Neha Singh Rathore has expressed her support for the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) newly implemented ‘Rules for Promoting Equality in Higher Education Institutions, 2026,’ amid ongoing debates and opposition.

Speaking about the rules, Neha Singh Rathore said the primary aim is to foster equality within society. She questioned, “If the law’s purpose is to prevent discrimination or insult, where is the problem?” The singer emphasized her stance by adding, “I belong to the upper caste, but that does not make me a thief. Laws against theft exist to deter thieves.”

Neha drew parallels with the reservation system and the SC-ST Act, noting that both faced significant resistance initially. “Even today, there are protests against the SC-ST Act, yet these laws have protected millions from discrimination. Social change often invites mixed reactions—some welcome it, others oppose,” she observed.

She urged people to rise above caste divisions and adopt a more liberal and open mindset. “If anyone disagrees, they have the right to resign or protest. The Constitution guarantees these rights, and everyone is free to exercise them,” she said.

Addressing the selective criticism surrounding the rules, Neha questioned the silence on issues related to Urdu, while pointing out the spread of irrational and baseless claims such as consuming cow dung or urine. She added, “Whether or not a political party benefits, this law is beneficial for society and the nation.”

Regarding the ongoing controversy involving Shankaracharya, Neha said, “Saints deserve respect. I have heard that saints have big hearts. If there is a mistake, one should apologise. Anyone can err. The government claims this is an opposition agenda. I do not know whose agenda it is, but the truth is this was not an AI-generated video, and the main issues are being ignored.”
