Mumbai, April 10: It is often said that true talent finds recognition, and when that happens, life takes a new direction. This was the case for Bollywood’s renowned singer Shilpa Rao. Today, her voice resonates in the hearts of millions, but her journey took a pivotal turn when the legendary singer Hariharan was so impressed by her talent that he brought her to Mumbai. This moment became a significant turning point in her life, propelling her onto a new path.
Born on April 11, 1984, in Jamshedpur, Shilpa Rao’s real name is Apeksha Rao. She hails from a Telugu-speaking family. Growing up in a musically inclined household, her father, S. Venkata Rao, provided her with early music education. Shilpa developed a passion for singing at a young age and was part of the school choir. She also received training in Ghazal singing.
The most significant change in Shilpa’s life occurred when she met Hariharan. Although she was quite young at the time, her voice had a unique magic. Hariharan immediately recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue her dreams. He even brought Shilpa to Mumbai to help her refine her art on a larger platform. It was at this moment that Shilpa decided to make singing her career.
However, the road in Mumbai was not easy for Shilpa. She faced considerable struggles initially. Her voice was distinct from other singers, which made it difficult for her to get opportunities quickly. During this period, she began her career by singing jingles. For nearly three years, she sang for advertisements and gradually started to make a name for herself in the industry.
In 2007, Shilpa received her first major break when music director Mithoon offered her the chance to sing “Tose Naina” for the film ‘Anwar.’ The song became a massive hit, giving Shilpa recognition in the industry. Since then, she has not looked back, consistently delivering hit songs. Tracks like “Khuda Jaane,” “Malang,” “Wo Ajnabi,” and “Mudi Mudi” have established her unique identity.
Shilpa Rao has collaborated with several prominent music directors, but her partnership with Vishal-Shekhar is particularly cherished. The song “Besharam Rang” from the film ‘Pathaan’ was also composed by this duo, showcasing Shilpa’s vocal prowess. The song garnered significant attention and was well-received by audiences.
Throughout her career, Shilpa Rao has received numerous awards and accolades. Her singing possesses a depth that sets her apart from other artists. In addition to Hindi, she has also sung in Tamil and Telugu films.
