NCW Takes Action in Jodhpur Sisters Suicide Case Amid Outrage

New Delhi, May 19: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of media reports regarding the tragic suicides of two sisters in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, allegedly linked to prolonged gang rape, blackmail, and sexual exploitation.

This case has sparked widespread outrage and protests in the region. The sisters, from a rural area in Jodhpur, reportedly faced years of sexual abuse and threats. Despite repeatedly seeking help, they encountered alleged police inaction, leading to their suicides within two months of each other.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police in Rajasthan, urging them to ensure “immediate, fair, and timely action” in this matter.

The NCW has requested a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days. They seek information on the legal provisions applied in the FIR, the status of arrests, the current state of the investigation, and any digital and forensic evidence collected so far.

The commission has also demanded clarification on the allegations of police inaction despite previous complaints from the victims’ family. They are inquiring whether accountability has been established for the relevant authorities.

Additionally, the NCW is seeking information on the legal aid, psychological counseling, security, and rehabilitation support being provided to the victims’ family. They are also asking about measures being taken to ensure swift action in future cases of sexual offenses and blackmail against women.

Condemning the incident, the commission stated that such crimes against women and any negligence in investigation or response will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

According to the complaint, the elder sister took her life in March after allegedly being a victim of gang rape, blackmail, and extortion for several years. Approximately two months later, her younger sister also ended her life, having failed to obtain justice despite multiple attempts to contact the police.

In a police complaint filed on April 11, the younger sister alleged that a local ‘e-Mitra’ service operator named Mahipal had ensnared her elder sister. Mahipal reportedly recorded explicit videos of her without consent and later used them to blackmail her. The complaint named eight individuals, including Mahipal, Shivraj, Gopal, Vijram, Dinesh, Manoj, and Pukhraj, who were accused of gang-raping the victim and repeatedly threatening her.

The younger sister claimed that Mahipal and his associates exploited and blackmailed the victim for nearly four years. Unable to endure the torment any longer, the elder sister allegedly took her life on March 20.

She had warned the police that if she did not receive justice, she would take drastic measures. However, despite the filing of an FIR based on her complaint, the family alleged that no significant action was taken in the following month. This led to growing anger among local residents and social organizations regarding the handling of the case.
