NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar Visits Tihar Jail, Emphasizes Rehabilitation of Female Inmates

New Delhi, May 10: Vijaya Rahatkar, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), visited Tihar Jail today. During her visit, she engaged in discussions with female inmates, emphasizing the importance of their dignity, safety, mental health, and rehabilitation opportunities.

An official reported on Sunday that “Tihar Jail is functioning as a model prison.” Rahatkar shared on social media platform ‘X’, “Today, I toured Tihar Jail. I reviewed the facilities available for female inmates, welfare measures, rehabilitation initiatives, and their living conditions.”

The NCW Chairperson noted that the visit included the presence of various officials, including the Director General of Prisons (DG) Anand Mohan, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Kuldeep Singh, and Superintendent Amita Suman.

Rahatkar conducted a thorough tour of different sections of the prison, which included barracks and cells for female inmates, a crèche for children living with their mothers, a fashion lab, a sewing and skill training center, a digital learning room, recreational facilities, a kitchen, medical services, and counseling rooms.

She mentioned that she spoke with female inmates to review the rehabilitation and skill development programs being implemented. Special emphasis was placed on empowering female inmates through vocational training, education, counseling, and mental health support to ensure their social rehabilitation.

Following her visit, she reiterated the need to ensure the dignity, safety, mental health, and rehabilitation opportunities for all female inmates while appreciating the efforts to provide skill-based training and welfare support.

Earlier, during her visit to Mumbai, the NCW Chairperson toured KEM Hospital, where she reviewed the operations of the government-run ‘One Stop Centre’ for women affected by violence. During this visit, she interacted with the center’s staff and provided suggestions to enhance its services.

In a message on social media, Rahatkar expressed satisfaction after visiting the ‘One Stop Centre’ at KEM Hospital, noting the medical room, counseling room, temporary shelter facility, and the overall pleasant environment of the center.
