Kolkata, June 21: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has sent another notice to the authorities of Visva-Bharati University (VBU) regarding allegations of irregularities in the appointment of an Associate Professor from a Scheduled Tribe background in the Bengali department.
In February of this year, the NCST requested a report from the Vice-Chancellor of VBU. After receiving no response, the commission has now issued a second notice to the university officials.
This time, the commission has demanded a detailed report from Vice-Chancellor Dr. Probir Kumar Ghosh. VBU has been ordered to submit all relevant information and actions taken concerning the complaint within seven days.
In its notice, the commission clearly stated that if a response is not received within the specified time, university officials may be summoned using the powers granted by the Constitution.
Associate Professor Tushar Patua from Kalyani University filed a written complaint with the commission in January, alleging multiple irregularities in the recruitment process for the Associate Professor (ST) position in the Bengali department. He claimed that eligible candidates were excluded from the interview process. The commission initiated an investigation based on this complaint.
Patua asserts that the university’s silence has raised further questions about the recruitment process.
In January, a controversy erupted over the preliminary list published after the interviews for Assistant and Associate Professor positions in the Bengali department were postponed. Several candidates questioned the selection criteria and the reasons for their exclusion. Although the interview process was completed in May, the controversy surrounding the appointment of the Associate Professor (ST) remains unresolved. All eyes are now on Visva-Bharati’s response and the NCST’s next steps.
There has been no official response from Visva-Bharati officials regarding this matter.
