Noida, 1 January. As the new year 2026 begins, residents of the National Capital Region (NCR) continue to face severe air pollution. On the very first day of the year, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi-NCR was recorded in the ‘severe’ category.

Data from various monitoring stations of the Central and State Pollution Control Boards showed that AQI levels in almost all parts of Delhi ranged between 300 and 420, a level considered extremely hazardous to health.

Key areas in Delhi recorded the following AQI values: Anand Vihar at 418, Rohini 413, Wazirpur 414, Sonia Vihar 421, Vivek Vihar 404, and DTU 391. Other locations included Ashok Vihar at 392, Chandni Chowk 377, Bawana 370, R.K. Puram 381, Shadipur 382, and Siri Fort 384. Alipur and Aya Nagar recorded AQI of 328 and 327 respectively, while CRRI Mathura Road showed 310. Punjabi Bagh had 391, and Pusa recorded 366.

These figures indicate that hardly any part of the capital had air quality fit for breathing. The situation in NCR cities adjoining Delhi was similarly grim. Ghaziabad’s Loni area recorded an AQI of 401, Vasundhara 399, while Indirapuram and Sanjay Nagar registered 274 and 279 respectively.

Noida also reflected poor air quality with Sector 1 at 393, Sector 125 at 354, Sector 62 at 348, and Sector 116 at 363. Overall, a large part of NCR remained in the severe to very poor pollution category.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rainfall on 1 January. According to the IMD, the sky will remain cloudy throughout the day with very light rain possible in the morning and afternoon. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 15 degrees Celsius and minimum around 10 degrees Celsius. This rainfall is expected to provide some relief from pollution.

However, the IMD has also warned of dense fog in the mornings on 2 and 3 January. On 2 January, the maximum temperature is likely to be 17 degrees Celsius and minimum 10 degrees Celsius, whereas on 3 January, the minimum temperature could drop to 8 degrees Celsius. This indicates that cold conditions will intensify in the coming days, and fog may disrupt daily life.
