NASAs Artemis 2 Mission Set for Launch, Astronauts to Orbit the Moon for 10 Days

New Delhi, April 2: NASA is preparing to launch four astronauts on a mission that will see them orbit the Moon. The live broadcast of the Artemis 2 mission has already begun. The rocket is scheduled to launch on Thursday morning at approximately 4 AM.

This mission marks NASA’s first crewed flight under the Artemis program. The launch will take place from a facility in Florida, USA.

The Artemis 2 launch is set for April 1 from the Kennedy Space Center. According to U.S. time, the launch will commence at 6:24 PM (3:54 AM Indian time on Thursday). The mission includes four astronauts: Reid Wiseman (mission commander), Victor Glover (pilot), Christina Koch (mission specialist), and Jeremy Hansen (mission specialist) from the Canadian Space Agency.

Following the launch, the crew will travel into space aboard the Orion spacecraft named ‘Integrity,’ orbiting the Moon for about 10 days before returning. This mission serves as the first crewed test of the launch vehicle and the Orion spacecraft, evaluating the technologies necessary for long-term lunar exploration and human missions to Mars.

NASA’s Associate Administrator, Amit Kshatriya, stated, “53 years ago, humans returned from the Moon and have not been back since. Now we are going back.”

The Artemis 2 rocket will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This 10-day mission will bring astronauts close to the Moon, although they will not land. The mission faced delays last month due to technical issues, but everything is now ready.

Christina Koch, one of the astronauts on this mission, expressed, “We hope this mission marks the beginning of a new era where every person can see the Moon as a destination.”
