Kuala Lumpur, April 2: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Thursday that government employees will begin working from home (WFH) starting April 15. This initiative aims to conserve fuel amid rising energy costs.
The government’s goal is to reduce fuel consumption and save energy. Currently, the government spends approximately $1 billion monthly to subsidize affordable petrol and diesel for the public.
In a special address, Prime Minister Ibrahim emphasized that this initiative is part of the government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the global energy crisis on citizens.
He previously advised the private sector to allow some employees to work from home as well. Ibrahim, who also serves as the Finance Minister, stated that the treasury will spend 4 billion ringgit monthly to manage the rising crude oil prices resulting from the closure of the Hormuz Strait.
“This is no small achievement,” he remarked, adding that the subsidy is vital for the safety of the Malaysian people.
“However, our capacity to bear these costs is certainly limited. We must consider the experiences of other countries,” he noted.
Despite these challenges, Ibrahim assured that the government is working to secure Malaysia’s energy supply, which includes diversifying its oil and gas import sources.
He further mentioned that discussions with leaders from Iran, Gulf nations, and Indonesian President Joko Widodo revealed concerns about worsening outcomes from the ongoing Middle East conflict.
“All of them expressed hope that the situation would improve before it gets any worse,” he said.
The cabinet has agreed to implement the work-from-home arrangement for government ministries, agencies, statutory bodies, and government-linked companies starting April 15.
