Mumbai, May 17: Muslim leaders held a meeting on Sunday with representatives from NGOs, lawyers, social activists, and political party leaders to discuss administrative preparations for the upcoming Bakrid festival and to ensure a peaceful celebration.
This festival, celebrated by Muslims worldwide, will be observed in India on May 27, depending on the sighting of the moon.
After the meeting, AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan expressed concerns about individuals spreading hatred and attempting to create unrest. He noted that some people are posing as cow protectors and arbitrarily stopping vehicles. Pathan mentioned that a committee has been formed to legally address all complaints, as various issues often arise during the festival.
Advocate Amin Solkar appealed for a peaceful observance of Bakrid, emphasizing strict adherence to the rules and guidelines set by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra government.
He reiterated that all activities would be conducted in accordance with the BMC’s issued guidelines.
Muslim cleric Mufti Mohammad Ashfaq Qazi highlighted the Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb in India, stating that all festivals are celebrated peacefully. He assured that this tradition would be upheld during Bakrid as well.
Qazi stressed that sometimes individuals, whether Hindu or Muslim, attempt to disrupt communal harmony for personal gain. He stated that if it is necessary to register animals (goats) with the BMC as per the law, it should be done. He also mentioned that their team of lawyers would work to prevent any incidents that could disturb law and order. Mufti Qazi urged everyone to celebrate the festival with peace and brotherhood.
