Mumbais Dharavi Redevelopment to Meet International Standards: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai, June 8: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed officials on Monday to redevelop Dharavi in line with modern housing projects from Singapore and Hong Kong. He emphasized that the transformation must prioritize the residents of Dharavi, their livelihoods, and local identity, while ensuring the project is completed within the stipulated timeframe.

Speaking at a high-level review meeting for the Dharavi redevelopment project, Fadnavis stated that this initiative is not merely about constructing buildings; it is a comprehensive effort for the overall development of Dharavi’s residents. He stressed that the local industrial and social ecosystem must be preserved. While commercial development is a component, the welfare of the people should take precedence.

He clarified that protecting the employment and livelihoods of local residents is paramount. Highlighting local heritage, the Chief Minister pointed out that Kumharwada, a settlement of potters, is not only a commercial hub for clay pottery but also a significant part of Dharavi’s cultural and tourism legacy.

Given the influx of tourists to Kumharwada, he instructed officials to consult stakeholders and find a harmonious solution that preserves its unique identity.

Additionally, the Chief Minister directed that the proposed ‘Nature Park’ concept under the project be effectively implemented, with careful planning for tree planting and new greening initiatives to maintain ecological balance.

Describing it as an ambitious project, Fadnavis set a target to hand over at least 10,000 homes to residents by 2028 in the first phase.

To ensure quick single-window approvals for all necessary permits, he ordered the establishment of a special cell and called for steps to reorganize administrative processes.

He expressed confidence that coordinated efforts from all departments would lead to the timely completion of the project, granting Mumbai a new global identity.
