Mumbai, August 12: Ganesh Kanekar, a leader from the BJP in Maharashtra’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has announced plans to enhance sanitation services in slum areas. He emphasized the need for year-round cleaning of drains, increased wages for sanitation workers, and better facilities in BMC schools.
In a recent interview, Kanekar pointed out that sanitation workers currently receive around ₹5,800, which he believes is inadequate. He argued that their compensation should be doubled to between ₹11,000 and ₹12,000 to motivate them to perform their duties effectively.
He also highlighted that, until a decade ago, drain cleaning in small settlements was a regular practice throughout the year. Despite the introduction of the Adopt-a-Slum scheme, the cleaning of drains and garbage collection has significantly declined. To address this, he stated that they have separated the garbage collection tasks and will ensure that drain cleaning continues year-round. This initiative aims to prevent the inconveniences caused during the rainy season.
Kanekar reminisced about a time 20-25 years ago when it was common for drains to overflow, but regular cleaning kept the situation manageable. He expressed a desire to restore that standard, ensuring a cleaner Mumbai for its residents. He also mentioned that middle-class families living in regular societies deserve development through municipal services, as they contribute taxes to the BMC.
Regarding the distribution of supplies in BMC schools, he confirmed that efforts to provide students with umbrellas and uniforms are ongoing.
