Mumbai, May 24: In a significant operation, the Mumbai Police’s Anti-Narcotics Cell has detained drug peddler Iqbal Mohammad Ali Sheikh for one year under the provisions of the PIT-NDPS Act.
The 36-year-old resident of Dharavi has eight registered cases against him under the NDPS Act in areas including Dharavi, Sakinaka, and Worli. The Worli unit had previously taken action in 2025 regarding one of these NDPS cases and filed a chargesheet.
Although Iqbal was released on bail earlier, police reported that he had resumed his involvement in drug-related activities. Consequently, the Mumbai Police proposed his relocation under the PIT-NDPS Act, which has been approved by the Maharashtra Home Department.
Iqbal was taken into custody on May 24 and sent to Yerwada Central Jail. This operation marks the seventh conducted by the Anti-Narcotics Cell in 2026 under the PIT-NDPS Act.
On May 23, to curb the rising drug trafficking activities in the Kholi and Palava areas of Dombivli in Thane district, the Navi Mumbai and Manpada police conducted a joint operation. During this combing operation, a total of 24 Nigerian nationals were detained, including women and minors.
