Mumbai Indians Captain Reflects on Narrow Loss to RCB in IPL 2026

Mumbai, May 11: In the 54th match of IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians (MI) faced a disappointing 2-wicket defeat against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). This loss has dashed MI’s hopes of reaching the playoffs. Captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed that the team’s batsmen fell short by 10 to 15 runs, a deficit that ultimately cost them the match.

After the game, Suryakumar stated, “I believe we were 10-15 runs short. That’s how it felt. We lost wickets at crucial moments. However, the way Naman Dheer and Tilak Varma batted was impressive on this wicket. They showed great determination. Watching Naman and Tilak, it seemed like they were playing on a different pitch. We are proud of them.”

This defeat marks MI’s eighth loss of the season against RCB, effectively closing the door on their playoff aspirations. Reflecting on MI’s overall performance in the tournament, Suryakumar said, “We can only try to play this game because we enjoy it. As I mentioned, whenever we get the chance, we will strive to give our best and showcase our best game. However, we are not accustomed to being in such a difficult position (at the bottom of the points table). Accepting this is hard, but there are many lessons to learn throughout the season. We can come back stronger next year.”

Suryakumar also praised Corbin Bosch for his outstanding bowling performance, noting that he excelled during the powerplay and in the final overs, making the team proud. He encouraged Raj Bawa, who struggled to defend 15 runs in the last over, stating that Raj gave his best effort.

Batting first, MI scored 166 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their 20 overs. Naman Dheer contributed 47 runs, while Tilak Varma scored a solid 57. However, RCB successfully chased down the target of 167 runs on the last ball, thanks to Krunal Pandya’s remarkable innings of 73 runs off 46 balls, with Jacob Bethel adding 27 runs.
