New Delhi, July 28: Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam has made India proud by winning a bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg weightlifting category at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The athlete from Manipur lifted a total of 199 kg to secure her position on the podium.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her on social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Another medal for India in weightlifting! Proud of Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for winning the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg category at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Her success is a result of her hard work and determination. Best wishes for her future endeavors.”
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also extended his congratulations, saying, “Courage, grip, and pride! Congratulations to Bindyarani Devi for winning the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg category, securing India’s fifth medal in weightlifting. Keep making the nation proud.”
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh praised Bindyarani Devi, posting on ‘X’, “Heartfelt congratulations to Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for winning the bronze medal in the women’s 58 kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. In an interview after her win, Bindyarani Devi expressed her joy, saying, “This medal means a lot to me. I previously competed in the 55 kg category, and now I have transitioned to the 58 kg category. Despite the change, I am thrilled to have won the bronze medal.”
She further stated, “Winning this medal feels fantastic. I will give my best to win a medal at the Asian Games as well.”
