Mumbai, April 28: Indian Railways has officially increased the number of coaches in the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express from 16 to 20. This change will take effect from April 28, enhancing passenger capacity significantly.
Train number 22961/22962 will now feature an additional four coaches, including three AC chair car coaches and one executive class coach. This upgrade aims to provide better seating facilities on one of India’s busiest and most popular intercity rail routes.
The decision to expand the service comes in response to sustained and high demand since its inception. What began as a temporary arrangement to meet peak travel needs has now transitioned into a permanent operational setup, reflecting Indian Railways’ commitment to maintaining capacity in line with passenger expectations.
To date, 162 Vande Bharat services have been launched, reducing travel time on several routes by up to 45%. Of these, 90 services operate with 8 coaches, 38 with 20 coaches, and 34 with 16 coaches. This indicates that approximately 23.45% of Vande Bharat services have been upgraded to 20 coaches, while around 21% continue with 16 coaches, and the remaining services operate with 8 coaches.
The 491-kilometer route, which completes its journey in 5 hours and 30 minutes, stops at Borivali, Vapi, Surat, and Vadodara, connecting two of Western India’s most economically vibrant cities. It caters to a diverse range of passengers, including business travelers, students, daily commuters, and tourists, for whom speed, comfort, and reliability are now expectations rather than mere aspirations.
In the fiscal year 2025-26, nearly 40 million passengers traveled on Vande Bharat Express services, marking a 34% increase from the previous year. Since its launch in 2019, Vande Bharat Express has served over 91 million passengers across 100,000 trips. The occupancy rate across the network has consistently exceeded 100%, indicating not only high demand but also growing trust in the service’s quality and reliability among travelers.
The rising popularity of Vande Bharat trains stems from a combination of factors that are transforming travel in India. A new generation of rail passengers, who are younger, more dynamic, and unwilling to compromise on comfort or punctuality, have found in Vande Bharat a service that meets their expectations.
Faster travel times compared to traditional services, clean coaches, an enhanced onboard experience, and significant improvements in punctuality have made these trains a preferred choice on various routes.
Indian Railways has taken similar steps, demonstrating that demand on the network’s most popular routes has consistently outstripped capacity. The permanent inclusion of the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad service in this category is not a random decision but part of a comprehensive, data-driven effort to ensure that the railway keeps pace with the aspirations of a changing India.
In addition to the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad service, the 20901/20902 Gandhinagar Capital-Mumbai Central Vande Bharat Express provides another crucial high-speed link between Gujarat and Maharashtra. This route connects Gandhinagar to Mumbai and also serves the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar area, enabling faster and more comfortable travel for business, administrative, and daily commuters while strengthening economic ties between the two states.
Vande Bharat services represent a fleet of semi-high-speed trains designed to enhance passenger experience and safety. These trains are equipped with advanced safety systems like ‘Kavach,’ along with features such as high speed and fully sealed corridors for improved stability and security. Automatic plug doors, ergonomic reclining seats, and rotating seats in executive class cater to passenger comfort.
Amenities on board include a mini pantry with hot case facilities, bottle coolers, deep freezers, and hot water boilers. Each seat is equipped with mobile charging sockets, while CCTV surveillance ensures security. Additionally, special toilets for differently-abled passengers are provided in the Driving Trailer Car (DTC), ensuring accessible and comfortable travel for all.
The permanent expansion of the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad service to 20 coaches is part of a broader narrative within the railway system that listens carefully to people’s needs, confidently expands, and ensures that millions of Indians choosing the Vande Bharat initiative never face a shortage of seats.
