Morgan Freeman Advocates for Unheard Histories of Black Heroes and Women

Los Angeles, June 20: Hollywood icons Morgan Freeman and Ben Vereen believe it is their duty to share the stories of overlooked Black heroes and heroines with the world.

The two actors are currently promoting their new historical drama series, “The Gray House,” which is based on the true stories of three women whose espionage efforts played a crucial role during the American Civil War. This series emerges at a time when discussions about representation, historical narratives, and the preservation of Black history in film and television are gaining momentum.

Morgan Freeman serves as an executive producer for this series, while Ben Vereen is fondly remembered for his role as “Chicken George” in the acclaimed 1977 miniseries “Roots.”

Vereen emphasized that the stories of his ancestors can never be erased or forgotten. He stated, “It is essential for me that these stories are told.” He shared that playing the character Isham Worthy in “The Gray House” is part of the mission he began years ago with “Roots.” Vereen noted that this role is entirely different from “Chicken George,” as he portrays a key member of the Underground Railroad, making this story vital for audiences.

This eight-episode series showcases the true story of three women who transform the Underground Railroad network into a secret espionage system.

Morgan Freeman also pointed out that many significant stories of Black individuals and women are nearly absent from mainstream American history. He remarked that if you want your story to be told, you must tell it yourself; no one else will do it for you.

Freeman expressed that the legacy of his ancestors continually inspires him, which drives his efforts to bring these untold stories to light. Vereen added that he is astonished when some people claim that there is no longer a need to share stories related to slavery and Black history.
