Tel Aviv, February 25: Lauren Dagan Amos, an expert on Indian politics and foreign policy, shared her insights on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel. She noted a prevailing atmosphere of pride, gratitude, and excitement in Israel regarding this trip.

Amos highlighted that discussions during Modi’s visit would focus on India’s rapid economic progress, digital transformation, and strengthening diplomacy. She mentioned that people are eager to see Modi, as he connects with the Indian diaspora during every foreign trip, which adds to the excitement this time as well.

Describing the meeting as significant, Amos emphasized that while this is not the first encounter, its importance is greater now. During this visit, both nations may forge agreements in economic cooperation, cultural partnerships, and defense sectors.

Reflecting on the history of India-Israel relations, Amos stated that full diplomatic ties were established in January 1992. However, real transformation became evident after 2014. Initially, the relationship was limited and not widely discussed, but it has since expanded to include defense, economy, and culture.

Discussing security cooperation, Amos pointed out that both countries face similar challenges, dealing with extremist radicalism both domestically and internationally. She noted that the significance of air defense systems became clear during recent military operations and the Gaza conflict. According to her, both nations can learn from each other, and this mutual learning will deepen and strategize their future relations.

Amos also remarked that Modi’s second visit to Israel holds historical significance. Before 2017, no Indian Prime Minister had visited Israel; previous visits were limited to former Prime Ministers or Presidents. Amid current international challenges, Modi’s visit sends a special message. She added that since October 7, India has consistently shown support for Israel, maintaining a close relationship.

On economic cooperation, Amos stated that investment has been the foundation of this relationship. Even before formal ties, agriculture and water management were key areas of collaboration. She shared an interesting anecdote about Modi’s visit to Israel in 2002 when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, where he explored various investments, including the company Netafim. Modi remembers these investments and appreciates genuine cooperation.

Amos also commented on the ongoing discussions about potential agreements in India. She noted that many of the deals being discussed have already been signed. While this visit may not result in a significant new agreement, it will pave the way for numerous future agreements.

Regarding the depth of security relations, Amos mentioned that defense cooperation between India and Israel has strengthened over the past two years. A significant memorandum of understanding was signed during a visit by India’s Director General of Defense Ministry three months ago, with visible results now emerging.

She further stated that both countries should not limit themselves to security cooperation but should also enhance partnerships in development sectors. Israeli industries should seek more investment and technological collaboration opportunities in India, benefiting both nations in the long run.
