
New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Saturday at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Ahmed is in the city to participate in the 18th BRICS summit, where Ethiopia has recently joined as a new member.
During their meeting, the two leaders explored ways to enhance bilateral relations between India and Ethiopia. They identified significant opportunities for cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, development partnerships, capacity building, agriculture, information technology, and people-to-people connections.
The two leaders greeted each other warmly with a hug at the beginning of their discussion. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in New Delhi on Friday, where he was warmly welcomed by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth.
India, under its BRICS presidency, is focusing on strengthening collaboration with countries in the Global South. The 18th BRICS summit is taking place in New Delhi from September 12 to 13.
Ethiopia became a member of the BRICS group in 2024, which has since accelerated cooperation and engagement between India and Ethiopia on multilateral platforms. The current summit provides both nations an opportunity to discuss bilateral relations as well as global and regional issues.
Historically, India and Ethiopia have maintained strong ties. Their development partnership and capacity-building efforts are crucial areas of collaboration. Ethiopia has supported India’s initiatives related to development and issues concerning the Global South.
Previously, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed have held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of BRICS events. In 2023, during a meeting in Johannesburg, they discussed expanding cooperation in sectors such as trade, investment, defense, ICT, agriculture, youth skill development, and development partnerships.
