Modi Welcomes Peace Efforts in West Asia During Call with Iranian President

New Delhi, July 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday evening. During the call, he welcomed the recent agreement aimed at ending conflicts in West Asia.

President Pezeshkian updated Prime Minister Modi on recent developments in the region and the situation moving forward. Modi expressed that continuous efforts are essential to maintain lasting peace and stability in the area. He reiterated India’s long-standing belief that all issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of uninterrupted movement and trade along maritime routes, alongside maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Earlier, the two leaders had a conversation on March 21, where they discussed the security situation in West Asia in detail. Modi condemned attacks on critical infrastructure in the region and stressed the importance of securing maritime routes and ensuring safe passage for vessels.

In a previous discussion on March 12, Modi expressed concern over rising tensions in the area, noting that it has resulted in loss of life and damage to infrastructure.

Last month, during a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in New Delhi, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi described the Chabahar port as a significant symbol of India-Iran cooperation. He expressed confidence that this developing port, with India’s assistance, would serve as a “golden gateway” for India to access Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Europe.

Araghchi stated, “Chabahar port is one of the most important examples of India-Iran cooperation. We are pleased that India has played a crucial role in its development. Although its pace has slowed due to U.S. sanctions, I am confident that this port will provide India with a golden route to Central Asia, the Caucasus, and then Europe. It will also be a vital passage for Europe, Central Asia, and other countries to reach the Indian Ocean.”

He added, “This is a highly strategic and significant port, crucial for us, India, and many other countries. I hope India continues its work at Chabahar port so that it can be fully developed and serve the interests of India and its neighboring countries.”

Araghchi noted, “India has a good international reputation and can play a significant role in promoting diplomacy, peace, and security in the region. India maintains good relations with almost all countries in the Persian Gulf, so we welcome any positive and constructive role India takes in this area.”
