Modi Hails Ramsar Recognition for Etah Bird Sanctuary and Kutch Chhari-Dhand

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his happiness over the recognition of the Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah, Uttar Pradesh, and the Chhari-Dhand in Kutch, Gujarat, as Ramsar sites. He stated that these designations reflect India’s commitment to conserving biodiversity and protecting vital ecosystems.

Sharing his thoughts on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote, “I am glad that the Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah (Uttar Pradesh) and Chhari-Dhand in Kutch (Gujarat) have become Ramsar sites. Congratulations to the local communities and all those enthusiastic about wetland conservation. These recognitions affirm our dedication to preserving biodiversity and safeguarding important ecosystems. May these wetlands continue to thrive as safe habitats for countless migratory and resident species.”

Earlier, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav announced that the Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah district and Chhari-Dhand in Kutch district have been added to the list of Ramsar sites. The announcement was made ahead of World Wetlands Day on February 2.

In his post on X, the minister stated, “With World Wetlands Day approaching, I am pleased to announce that two new names have joined India’s growing Ramsar network. The Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhari-Dhand in Kutch, Gujarat, are now prestigious Ramsar sites.”

Bhupender Yadav highlighted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s Ramsar network has expanded from 26 sites in 2014 to 98 sites at present, marking an increase of over 276 percent. This international recognition reflects India’s strong commitment to environmental protection and the conservation of its rich wetlands.

The minister also noted that hundreds of migratory and resident bird species find their home in these wetlands. Additionally, these areas provide habitat for species such as chinkara, wolves, caracals, desert cats, desert foxes, and some endangered birds.
