Midnight Hunger: A Sign of Poor Health and Weakening Body

New Delhi, March 12: Experiencing hunger and eating are both essential for our health, as food provides the energy our bodies need to function. However, sudden hunger pangs at night often lead us to rely on packaged foods. We might satisfy our cravings with biscuits or noodles, but what causes this nighttime hunger?

Few people are aware that this phenomenon is scientifically termed Night Eating Syndrome. It describes a condition where individuals can control overeating during the day but feel an uncontrollable urge to eat at night. This is why some struggle to maintain moderation at dinner. Many even find themselves waking up to eat. These symptoms reflect a poor lifestyle.

According to Ayurveda, this issue is often linked to an imbalance in daily routines and digestive fire. Staying awake late into the night can also contribute. When the body’s natural eating schedule is disrupted, the digestive system is affected. Nighttime is considered a period for rest and repair; frequent eating during this time can hinder digestion. Over time, this may lead to weight gain and a feeling of heaviness in the morning, negatively impacting sleep quality.

To address these issues, Ayurveda offers several strategies to gradually improve lifestyle habits. One recommendation is to eat before sunset and opt for lighter meals. Avoid fried foods, as they require more effort for the body to digest.

Another effective method is to consume warm milk before bedtime. Warm milk promotes better sleep by calming the mind and body, leading to deeper rest. Additionally, it’s advisable to keep mobile devices away at night, as their light can disrupt sleep.
