How Often Should You Wash Your Hair in Summer? Tips for Natural Shine

New Delhi, April 23: The summer season brings intense sunlight, sweat, dust, and pollution, all of which significantly affect the scalp and hair. Many people find their hair feeling sticky during this time, while others experience dryness and lifelessness. This leads to the common question: Should you wash your hair daily in summer? Some individuals prefer to wash their hair every day to keep their scalp clean, while others avoid frequent washing, fearing it may weaken their hair. This confusion about hair care is quite common.

Our scalp naturally produces oil known as sebum. This oil helps prevent hair from drying out and provides a natural shine. However, increased sweating in summer can mix with dust and dirt, leading to a sticky scalp. If the scalp is not cleaned regularly, it can result in issues like itching, dandruff, and hair fall. However, this does not imply that daily shampooing is necessary.

Frequent shampooing can strip the scalp of its natural oils, causing hair to become weak and dry. Experts suggest that the frequency of hair washing depends on the individual’s hair type. Those with very oily hair may need to wash their hair about three times a week. In contrast, individuals with dry or curly hair may find that washing once or twice a week is sufficient.

Curly hair often struggles to retain natural oils, leading to quicker dryness. On the other hand, fine and straight hair can appear oily more quickly. Therefore, a one-size-fits-all approach does not apply to everyone.

Knowing the correct method to wash your hair is also essential. Experts advise against using very hot water, as it can strip moisture from the hair. Washing with lukewarm water is recommended. Instead of applying shampoo directly to the hair, it’s better to lather it in your hands first and then gently apply it to the scalp.

Using a conditioner after shampooing is also beneficial for hair. It softens the hair’s outer layer and helps prevent breakage.
