Michael Carrick Reflects on Missed Chances in Manchester Uniteds Loss to Atletico Madrid
Michael Carrick believes Manchester United could have secured a better result against Atletico Madrid after missing key scoring opportunities.

Madrid, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Manchester United‘s head coach, Michael Carrick, expressed disappointment following his team’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League group stage. Carrick noted that the match could have ended differently if his players had capitalized on the scoring opportunities they created.
The game started poorly for Manchester United, with Atletico Madrid taking the lead just one minute in. Giuliano Simon controlled a long pass and set up Pablo Barrios, who scored easily to put Atletico ahead 1-0. Despite this early setback, United regrouped and generated several promising chances. Carrick stated that his team had four significant opportunities to score but failed to convert any of them. He believes that if they had taken advantage of those moments, the outcome could have been very different.
After the match, Carrick told reporters that the contest was closely contested and that his team had a chance to secure a favorable result. “The match was even. If we disregard the goal in the first minute, which was undoubtedly a crucial moment, we remained competitive throughout,” he said, highlighting that they felt they could have turned the match in their favor, especially in the second half.
Carrick praised his team’s performance, emphasizing that creating chances against a strong side like Atletico Madrid is no small feat. “Very few teams come here and create as many good opportunities against Atletico. I think we did a lot of things right today, but we couldn’t convert those chances into goals,” he remarked.
Manchester United created several good opportunities during the match. Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford put pressure on Atletico’s defense, generating chances for their team. Atletico’s Johnny Cardoso also scored, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review confirmed a handball by Marcos Llorente prior to the goal.
Atletico nearly doubled their lead at the start of the second half, but Julian Alvarez’s shot struck the post. United continued to push for an equalizer, and Carrick noted that despite conceding early, his team managed to keep themselves in the game. However, he lamented their inability to convert their chances.
“We had four clear opportunities, and the match could have had a very different result. These were not just half-chances; they were genuine opportunities,” Carrick emphasized. The situation worsened for United when defender Leni Yoro received a red card for a last-man foul after a VAR review, forcing the team to play with ten men.
Atletico Madrid took full advantage of their numerical superiority. Goalkeeper Sene Lamenes saved Jonathan David’s attempt, but in the 79th minute, Ademola Lookman scored to secure a 2-0 victory for Atletico. Carrick acknowledged that the red card changed the dynamics of the match but pointed out that there were still many positive aspects of his team’s performance. “We felt the match was under our control. The biggest takeaway is that we could have achieved a better result, and perhaps we should have,” he said.
Carrick dismissed questions about his team’s confidence. He believes that their response after the early goal, their ball control, and the chances created against a strong opponent demonstrate a lack of confidence is not an issue. “I don’t think confidence is a problem. The way we responded here, controlled the game, and created chances shows that the team has belief,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Manchester United will now focus on the Premier League, aiming to return to winning ways against Leeds United.
