Officials reported that a total of 95 vehicles were purchased, with 79 funded through the Government of India’s ‘Central Assistance Scheme for State Police’.
The new fleet includes 20 Maruti Jimny vehicles, 19 Tata truck troop carriers, five Mahindra mini trucks, 19 buses with a capacity for 20 personnel, 10 buses for 24 personnel, eight buses capable of carrying 36 personnel, and eight Tata Yodha vehicles for the CID wing. In his address, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized that maintaining law and order is a fundamental responsibility of any government, and any negligence will not be tolerated. He stated the need for substantial investment in the police force to ensure effective law enforcement on the ground. The government has prioritized police modernization and initiated measures like the ‘Police Reserve Fund’ to enhance infrastructure and administrative efficiency at the grassroots level.
Sangma remarked, “Through these reforms, infrastructure that was once in a dilapidated state is now being renewed and upgraded. To expedite the work, powers and responsibilities have also been delegated to police superintendents and unit commanders.”
He highlighted the recruitment of over 3,000 personnel for long-vacant positions, marking a significant step towards strengthening the workforce. Referring to recent tensions in Lapangap, West Jaintia Hills, the Chief Minister praised the Meghalaya Police for maintaining peace and stability while the government continues discussions with Assam regarding interstate border issues.
He also commended DGP Nongrang and the police force for their dedication and professionalism in upholding law and order throughout the state.
