New Delhi, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is set to begin a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka on Tuesday. During his trip, he will engage in discussions with leaders of the island nation and meet members of the Indian community in Colombo. Singh will lead a high-level delegation that includes senior officials from both the Defense and External Affairs ministries.
According to the Defense Ministry, this visit aims to further strengthen the traditionally robust and friendly bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka, particularly in areas of maritime and defense cooperation.
In a statement, the Defense Minister emphasized the deep cultural ties and various partnerships between India and Sri Lanka. These connections are rooted in regional security, defense, economic and trade collaboration, and strong people-to-people relations. The bilateral relationship was notably enhanced when India extended assistance to Sri Lanka during its economic crisis and was one of the first responders following Cyclone ‘Dettweiler’ in 2025.
The statement further highlighted India’s commitment to its ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region), which focuses on mutual progress across all sectors.
Following Cyclone ‘Dettweiler’, India announced a reconstruction package worth $450 million for Sri Lanka. This package includes restoring connectivity through roads, railways, and bridges, rebuilding destroyed and damaged homes, and improving health, education, and disaster preparedness.
In August, Sri Lankan Navy Commander Vice Admiral Damian Fernando visited India. During his trip, he met with Chief of Defense Staff General N.S. Raja Subramaniam to review defense cooperation between the two nations.
The Integrated Defense Staff’s headquarters shared on social media that General Raja Subramaniam discussed ongoing defense collaboration with Vice Admiral Fernando. They explored new avenues for joint military training and capacity building, while addressing key regional security issues to strengthen the India-Sri Lanka strategic partnership.
Vice Admiral Fernando also met with Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, where they reviewed the progress of various initiatives under the bilateral defense cooperation plan.
Furthermore, he engaged with Indian Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan to discuss ways to enhance maritime security cooperation between the two countries. The Indian Navy reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region, aligning with India’s ‘SAGAR’ vision.
