Medical Student Gang-Rape in West Bengal: Three Detained, Police Use Drones for Search Operation

Kolkata, October 12 (Udaipur Kiran) — In a shocking incident, a medical student from Odisha studying at a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, was allegedly gang-raped near the college campus on Friday night. Police have detained three suspects for questioning, and an extensive search operation using drone cameras has been launched around the area.

The victim, who studies at a medical college in Shobhapur, Durgapur, had gone out of the campus with a male classmate on Friday evening. According to the complaint, a group of men first harassed her and then forcibly took her to a nearby wooded area, where the assault took place.

Three Detained, More Suspects Identified

During the initial investigation, police detained the victim’s classmate and later picked up two more suspects for questioning. While no formal arrests have been made yet, police sources said that a few more suspects have been identified and efforts are on to locate them.

The forensic team has collected crucial samples from the scene, while police have intensified surveillance using CCTV footage and drone-assisted searches.

CCTV Footage Reveals Timeline

The college administration issued a statement on Saturday, confirming that CCTV footage showed the student leaving the campus twice on Friday night. She first exited around 7:58 PM with her classmate and later returned alone, only to step out again shortly after. She came back to the hostel at 9:31 PM, accompanied by the same classmate.

After returning, she informed her hostelmates about the incident and was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.

National Women’s Commission Steps In

Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), met the survivor on Saturday. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Director General of West Bengal Police, urging swift arrests and an impartial investigation.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front, which had earlier led protests during the RG Kar Medical College case last year, also demanded a transparent inquiry.

In an official statement, the state police reiterated that there would be “zero tolerance” towards crimes against women, assuring that the culprits would not be spared.

Political and Government Reactions

The incident sparked political outrage. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held protests against the state government and gheraoed the New Township Police Station in Durgapur under the leadership of local MLA Laxman Ghordui.

State Minister for Women and Child Development Shashi Panja said that the police had acted promptly and that the survivor had expressed confidence in the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condemned the incident and urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure strict and exemplary punishment for the accused.

Police teams continue to comb the forested areas around the campus with drone assistance, using the victim’s statement, forensic evidence, and CCTV footage to track down all those involved.
