Mumbai, August 9: On the occasion of the birthday of legendary Indian cricketer Dilip Sardesai, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) unveiled a commemorative board at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.
The gate, named “Dilip Sardesai Gate – Gate Number 3,” was officially inaugurated in the presence of MCA Apex Council members, family members of the late cricketer, friends, and well-wishers. Although the gate was initially constructed in Sardesai’s honor, the board has now been added at the entrance.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik stated, “Dilip Sardesai made significant contributions to Mumbai and Indian cricket. He was a remarkable player and an integral part of India’s cricketing journey. On his birthday, it is fitting that we honor his memory and legacy at Wankhede Stadium. This board will remind generations of cricketers and cricket enthusiasts of his contributions to the sport.”
Sardesai, known as one of Mumbai’s finest stroke-makers and a celebrated Test batter, played a crucial role in India’s historic Test series victory against the West Indies in 1971. During that tour, he scored 642 runs, including two centuries and one double century, significantly contributing to India’s landmark win.
Born on August 8, 1940, in Goa, Dilip Sardesai made his debut for the Indian team at the age of 21 in 1961. He was the first cricketer from Goa to represent India. Over his 11-year international career, Sardesai amassed 2,001 runs in 55 innings across 30 matches, with a highest score of 212.
He played domestic cricket for Mumbai, participating in 179 first-class matches between 1960-61 and 1972-73. During this period, he scored 10,230 runs, including 25 centuries and 56 half-centuries. Dilip Sardesai, a revered figure in both Indian and Mumbai cricket, passed away on July 2, 2007, in Mumbai.
