Lucknow, May 12: Mayawati, the national president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), has expressed concern over the ongoing tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran, which could lead to potential energy and economic crises in India. She highlighted that rising prices of essential commodities like petrol, diesel, and cooking gas could severely impact the common people.
Mayawati called on both the central and state governments to take concrete measures to support poor and working-class families who are already struggling due to the pandemic and inflation. She emphasized the need for timely assistance during this crisis.
In a post on the social media platform X, she stated, “The uncertainty surrounding the war between the U.S. and Israel against Iran indicates that the crisis facing India is not limited to just petroleum products like petrol, diesel, and cooking gas, but also includes a deepening economic crisis that affects millions of Indians.”
She further noted that the nearly one billion people in the country, already facing severe challenges in securing their livelihoods post-pandemic, have little left to lose. In such a situation, it would be in the public and national interest for the central and state governments to provide some relief to these families.
It is noteworthy that amid the Iran crisis and global instability, the Prime Minister has urged citizens to reduce their consumption of petrol and diesel, adopt public transport, avoid unnecessary foreign travel, postpone gold purchases for a year, prioritize remote work, and reduce chemical fertilizer usage by farmers by up to 50%. The government argues that these measures will help alleviate energy consumption, import pressure, and the impact on foreign exchange reserves.
However, opposition parties are questioning the central government’s appeal, arguing that placing an additional burden of “restraint” on a populace already grappling with inflation, unemployment, and economic pressure does not solve the problems at hand.
