New York, August 27: Popular American singer Mary Millben stated that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat can use his upcoming address in New York to move beyond controversies and convey the organization’s message directly to the American people.
In an interview, she expressed, “First of all, I welcome the RSS chief to America. I believe that when such controversies arise, we forget the fundamental spirit of welcoming someone to our country.”
Mohan Bhagwat is scheduled to address an event in New York on August 29, focusing on unity and mutual connection, although it has sparked political debates in the city.
Millben noted that most Americans outside the Indian-American community know very little about the RSS. “If you talk to an average American on the streets of New York, they might not even know what the RSS is,” she said.
She acknowledged that the organization has been part of some controversies in the past but emphasized that its leaders should use this New York event to clarify the RSS’s message in today’s context.
“I think the most important thing for the RSS chief and the organization’s leaders is to tell people what the RSS’s message is today,” Millben added.
She expressed hope that Bhagwat would use this event to inform the American public about the positive aspects of the RSS, particularly its work related to support from the Hindu community. Millben urged the event organizers to include representatives from other religions as well.
“If the theme of this event is unity and harmony, it is a great opportunity to invite people from other communities and religions. This can demonstrate that the RSS and the Prime Minister’s message of religious freedom has broad support,” she stated.
Millben also criticized New York Mayor Jahan Mamdani’s comments regarding Bhagwat’s visit, suggesting that his stance appears influenced by his ties to the Democratic Socialists of America, which she described as quite radical.
“I had hoped he would oppose those narratives coming from India that relate to democracy, religious freedom, and certainly the support of Prime Minister Modi,” she said.
She believes Mamdani’s remarks were not only about Bhagwat but also pointed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ideas he represents. While she called Mamdani a talented politician, she suggested he is being misguided by some within his party.
“He is a talented young man, but I think he is receiving guidance in the wrong direction. If he gets the right guidance within the Democratic Party and a better understanding of how the world, America, and New York operate, his future could be very bright,” Millben remarked.
She urged Bhagwat to use the event to foster positive dialogue rather than political confrontation.
“I think this event is a great opportunity to calm the noise created by Mamdani and others. I hope the RSS chief and other leaders will take full advantage of this opportunity,” she concluded.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was founded in 1925 and describes itself as a volunteer-based cultural organization. Mohan Bhagwat has served as its chief since 2009 and is considered a significant figure in India’s broader Hindu nationalist movement.
Mary Millben is known in India for her performances of the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” and the devotional song “Om Jai Jagdish Hare.” She has also participated in various events connected to the Indian diaspora in both India and the United States.
