New Delhi – Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, reported a significant dip in sales for June 2025, signaling troubling times especially for its entry-level offerings. The company sold 1,67,993 units in June, registering a noticeable year-on-year and month-on-month decline. Domestic sales dropped to 1,18,906 units, which is 13.31% lower than June 2024 and 12.54% down from May 2025.

This translates to 18,257 fewer vehicles sold compared to the same month last year and 17,056 fewer units than in May 2025.

Mini Segment Suffers the Most

Maruti’s mini car portfolio, consisting of the Alto and S-Presso, saw sharp erosion in demand. Sales plummeted to 6,414 units, down from 9,395 units in June 2024. The steep fall highlights the growing disconnect between affordability and entry-level pricing, which has seen substantial hikes since 2019.

Compact Car Sales Slide

The compact segment, including bestsellers like the Baleno, Swift, WagonR, and Dzire, also took a hit. Maruti sold 54,177 units in June compared to 64,049 units in the same month last year. This slowdown is particularly striking given the segment’s historical role as a volume driver for the brand.

Ciaz Brings Some Hope to Mid-Size Segment

Interestingly, the mid-size sedan segment posted a mild recovery, led by the Ciaz, which sold 1,028 units—a significant jump from 572 units last year. However, with the Ciaz nearing the end of its lifecycle and no immediate replacement in sight, long-term prospects for this category remain uncertain.

SUV Sales Decline Despite Expanded Lineup

Maruti’s much-publicized push in the utility vehicle (UV) space didn’t deliver in June. With offerings like the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, XL6, and Jimny, the automaker managed 47,947 units, down from 52,373 units a year earlier. Even new models couldn’t generate enough traction to lift the segment.

Exports and OEM Sales Offer Silver Lining

While domestic numbers faltered, exports provided a rare bright spot. Overseas shipments grew by 21.94%, and sales to OEM partners rose by 6.46%. This helped cushion the overall impact, though it wasn’t enough to reverse the domestic downturn.

Why Are Budget Cars Losing Ground?

Maruti Suzuki’s Senior Executive Officer Rahul Bharti attributed the weakness in the entry-level car market to a 70% price increase since 2019. He noted that the once-thriving budget car segment has lost its momentum, as affordability becomes a pressing concern for many Indian buyers.

The Road Ahead

While the June figures reflect a concerning trend for Maruti’s smaller cars, the growth in exports and performance of mid-size vehicles offer a glimmer of hope. The brand is expected to refresh its lineup and stabilize pricing, which could revive momentum in the coming quarters. However, unless entry-level vehicles become truly affordable again, Maruti’s core market could continue to shrink. Ask ChatG
