Ahmedabad, June 25: The interest in electric vehicles (EVs) is rapidly increasing in Gujarat. The state government’s incentive policies, tax exemptions, subsidies, and growing environmental awareness have led to a significant rise in the sales of both two-wheeler and four-wheeler electric vehicles. Factors such as lower operating costs, reduced dependence on petrol and diesel, and zero carbon emissions are making electric vehicles the preferred choice for many consumers.
Experts believe that electric vehicles are not only a cost-effective mode of transportation but also play a crucial role in environmental conservation. This is why the EV market in Gujarat has been expanding consistently over the past few years, with nearly all major vehicle manufacturers launching their electric models.
Electric vehicle buyer Manit Shah states that the biggest advantage of EVs is their lack of pollution. Nowadays, many households are installing solar panels, making it even more economical to charge electric vehicles. He claims that EVs not only reduce expenses but also contribute to nature conservation.
Another buyer, Pankit Shah, mentions that the registration fees for electric vehicles at the RTO are significantly lower, which reduces the overall cost of purchasing a vehicle. Vehicles powered by charging are proving to be more profitable compared to petrol-powered cars, leading to substantial savings for consumers in the long run.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the Gujarat government has prioritized green initiatives in the 2026-27 budget. The government is implementing several schemes to promote electric mobility, reduce carbon emissions, and encourage clean energy. The subsidies, tax exemptions, and expansion of charging stations provided by the state government have generated enthusiasm for EVs among the middle class. As a result, customers purchasing electric vehicles are saving between ₹30,000 to ₹100,000 depending on the vehicle category.
According to Pranav Shah, head of the Federation of Auto Dealers Association in Gandhinagar, the tax exemptions on electric vehicles are the biggest attraction for customers. He noted that while registration fees for conventional vehicles can reach up to ₹60,000, this fee is limited to about ₹10,000 for electric cars, providing customers with an average direct benefit of ₹50,000.
He also mentioned that the registration fees for two-wheeler electric vehicles are nominal. Additionally, in several municipal areas, including Ahmedabad, the road tax on traditional vehicles ranges from 2.5% to 7%, while electric vehicles are completely exempt from this tax, requiring only a token fee of ₹25, which offers additional financial benefits to customers.
Pranav Shah observed that following the Prime Minister’s appeal to reduce the consumption of petroleum products to save foreign exchange reserves, public interest in electric vehicles has surged. Inquiries related to EVs have increased by 200% to 300%.
Sales figures confirm this growing trend. Last year, approximately 5,545 electric vehicles were registered in Gujarat throughout the year, while in just the first quarter of this year, 8,577 vehicles have already been registered. This represents a nearly 55% increase, indicating the rapid expansion of electric mobility in the state.
A few years ago, only a limited number of companies offered electric vehicles in Gujarat, but now nearly all major automobile companies are launching their electric models. This provides customers with various options based on price, features, and range. Overall, due to lower operational costs, government incentives, tax exemptions, improved charging infrastructure, and zero carbon emissions, electric vehicles are set to become a crucial part of future transportation systems.
