Lisbon, June 10: Former Fulham manager Marco Silva has been appointed as the new head coach of Portugal’s football club, Sport Lisboa e Benfica. He will take over from Jose Mourinho, who has decided to return to Real Madrid.
The 48-year-old Silva recently completed a five-year tenure with Fulham, where his contract at Craven Cottage came to an end. Benfica announced in an official statement that they have signed Silva to a two-year contract, which could be extended until the 2028/29 season. The club hopes that Silva’s experience will strengthen the team.
In another significant development in the football world, Benfica confirmed that their former coach, Jose Mourinho, is set to rejoin Real Madrid. Reports indicate that Real Madrid has agreed to pay approximately 15 million euros to bring Mourinho back.
At 63, Mourinho had recently taken charge at Benfica, leading the team to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga this season. Notably, his team did not lose a single match throughout the league season. This will mark Mourinho’s second return to Real Madrid, having previously coached the club from 2010 to 2013, during which he secured one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey, and one Spanish Super Cup.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has long been eager to bring Mourinho back. He pledged during his election campaign that he would reinstate Mourinho as part of the team. Additionally, the club has confirmed the departure of Alvaro Arbeloa.
Arbeloa recently completed his responsibilities as first-team coach. The club praised his contributions, noting his loyalty and professionalism. After the team’s poor performance, Arbeloa replaced Xabi Alonso in January. However, the club has failed to win a major title for the second consecutive season.
