Chandigarh, June 14: Congress MP Manish Tewari has responded to the recent discussions between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Tewari stated, “If you examine the details of the conversation released by the US State Department, it is extremely unfortunate. It reflects a deep insensitivity towards India’s concerns. There is no regret, no remorse, no empathy, and no compassion. A clear message has been conveyed that anyone violating US sanctions in the Hormuz Strait will pay the price. Essentially, this implies that the tanker attacked by the US was allegedly violating those sanctions.”
In a post on X, Tewari added, “There is no regret, no remorse, no compassion, and no empathy. The tone of the conversation was abrupt, harsh, and confrontational. Marco Rubio could not have been more aggressive. The underlying message is that the Indian sailors involved are solely responsible for what happened. Such language is rarely used in discussions with a country you call a friend. Instead of adopting a weak or ambiguous stance, Jaishankar should present a detailed account of this conversation. It will be interesting to see if Jaishankar stood firm against this brusqueness.”
Regarding the meeting between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump during the G-7 summit in France, Tewari remarked, “Since the current US administration took office, relations with India have been tumultuous. Whether it involves the alleged repatriation of undocumented Indians, imposing tariffs on India, or strengthening ties with a center of instability in South Asia, this is the same country that has long sponsored terrorism and is responsible for creating a dangerous and toxic environment in the region. I hope that if PM Modi meets with them, he will clearly and strongly articulate India’s concerns.”
