Imphal, August 7: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh stated on Friday that ongoing strikes, blockades, and various protests are severely affecting both the state and national economies. He emphasized the need for uninterrupted movement of goods and people.
Inaugurating a two-day consultation meeting and seminar on Manipur’s demographic profile, the Chief Minister noted that daily wage workers are the most adversely affected by these protests.
The event was jointly organized by the state’s Home Department and the Manipur State Population Commission.
Addressing the audience, Khemchand Singh highlighted the serious challenges faced by truck drivers who are stranded on national highways while delivering essential goods to the state due to the ongoing blockades.
He assured that the state government is always ready to assist in any actions and measures that benefit the general public.
Expressing confidence in the discussion outcomes, the Chief Minister stated that he believes the suggestions and proposals put forth by experts will be in the interest of the people.
He stressed that all recommendations should adhere to the provisions of the Constitution of India and urged citizens to refrain from any movements that disrupt daily life.
In his speech, Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh mentioned that the Manipur government has already informed the central government of its readiness to initiate the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process within the constitutional and legal framework.
He informed the public that the central Home Ministry has already established a high-level committee to study population-related changes in the country. The minister further stated that despite political or ideological differences, people should unite for the greater public interest and work towards resolving the issues faced by the state’s indigenous population.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, State Population Commissioner M. Manimohan Meitei, Secretary of the Manipur State Population Commission Dr. M. Veto Singh, leaders from various civil society organizations, community leaders, women leaders, intellectuals, academicians, and officials from the Home Department.
