Manipur Blast Claims Lives of Two Children; Three Militants Arrested

Imphal, April 9: In a tragic incident in Bishnupur district of Manipur, two young children lost their lives due to a bomb blast, while their mother sustained injuries. This occurred just a day before security forces apprehended three militants from the United Kuki National Army during a joint operation in the neighboring Churachandpur district.

According to police officials, the arrested militants have been identified as Jumpao Kuki, Sasang, and Paulalem Waifai. During the operation, security forces seized weapons and ammunition from the militants.

The confiscated items included an AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing 25 rounds, a pistol with two magazines and 15 rounds, ₹20,100 in cash, and two bags containing 21.19 kilograms of raw opium. Additional weapons were recovered in the Molphei Tampak area of Churachandpur district, including an MP-9 automatic rifle, a pistol magazine, two letho tubes, a locally made cannon, and five 70 mm cartridges.

The bombing incident occurred around 1 AM on Tuesday in the village of Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, allegedly carried out by Kuki militants who threw a powerful bomb into a house. The explosion resulted in the immediate deaths of a five-year-old boy and his five-month-old sister, while their mother was injured. Reports indicate that the family was asleep at the time, and the house suffered significant damage.

Tensions escalated following the blast. During a protest in Bishnupur, two demonstrators were killed, and 31 others were injured when a crowd attacked a CRPF camp. Another injured protester succumbed to their injuries the following day.

Approximately 500 people gathered to protest the children’s deaths. Officials reported that the demonstrators attacked the CRPF camp near Jailmol, set vehicles on fire, and damaged property.

In a separate operation, security forces seized two 9 mm pistols and documents, including medical records, PAN and Aadhaar cards, and currency from India and Myanmar, near border pillars 72 and 73 in Tengnoupal district. Additionally, a terrorist from the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup organization was arrested, and weapons and ammunition were recovered from various locations in Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

Meanwhile, the Manipur police have urged the public not to believe in rumors and to avoid falling victim to fake videos circulating on social media. They warned that any false video or audio clips can be verified through the central control room, and legal action will be taken against those spreading or posting fake content online.
