Kolkata, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata police have arrested a man accused of attempting to extort ₹5 lakh by impersonating a senior police officer. The suspect allegedly threatened a local resident with the release of personal information unless he paid the money.
The arrest of Rahul Roy followed a complaint filed at the Kalighat police station. Both Roy and the victim are residents of the Kalighat area and were previously acquainted. According to police reports, Roy posed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and showed a fake police ID to support his claims.
The victim, who had been facing personal issues, initially trusted Roy and disclosed sensitive information. Subsequently, Roy began to blackmail him, demanding ₹5 lakh and threatening to share his personal details on social media if he did not comply.
Out of fear, the victim paid ₹10,000 on September 27 and another ₹2,000 the following day. However, the demands did not cease, and the pressure to pay the remaining amount continued.
Suspicious of Roy’s identity, the victim conducted his own investigation and discovered that Roy was not a police officer, and the ID he presented was fraudulent. He then reported the matter to the Kalighat police, who quickly launched a search operation and apprehended Roy early Wednesday morning.
A senior officer from Kolkata police confirmed that a case has been registered against Roy under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into how Roy obtained the fake police identification and whether anyone else was involved in the attempted extortion.
Police are also examining the roles of Roy’s accomplices and the circumstances surrounding the creation of the counterfeit ID.
