New Delhi, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : Union Minister Giriraj Singh came to the defense of former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday, criticizing Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s recent remarks. Singh asserted that Gandhi lacks the moral authority to label Kumar a “traitor,” given that Kumar has never betrayed anyone throughout his political career.
This response follows reports of discord during a Congress Working Committee meeting, where Sonia Gandhi and senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh debated Kumar’s potential exit from the opposition alliance, known as the India Block, ahead of the 2024 elections. Sources indicate that Singh argued for efforts to retain Kumar within the coalition, while Gandhi suggested that Kumar was actively seeking to leave.
During the meeting, Digvijaya Singh reportedly stated that Kumar should not have been allowed to exit the alliance, as his continued presence could have altered the political landscape. In contrast, Gandhi countered that Kumar’s intention to depart was clear and that his exit ultimately benefited the opposition. She expressed relief that Kumar left when he did, suggesting it was inevitable.
The discussion occurred while the Congress Working Committee was addressing alleged irregularities in the voter list revision campaign led by the Election Commission.
In a video message, Singh reiterated his support for Kumar, emphasizing that the Janata Dal (United) leader has never supported corruption or anti-national elements. He praised Kumar’s dedication to national interests, whether as Chief Minister or Union Minister.
Singh further questioned the basis of Gandhi’s right to criticize Kumar, challenging her authority to lecture others on political integrity.
Kumar officially exited the India Block on January 28, 2024, resigning from his position as Chief Minister of the Grand Alliance and returning to the National Democratic Alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
