Mamata Banerjee Warns of Legal Action Over SIR in West Bengal

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday criticised the BJP and the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. She alleged that the SIR is being used as a cover to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal.

Addressing a public meeting in Singur, Hooghly, Banerjee demanded accountability from the central government and warned that she would personally approach the courts if necessary. She claimed that nearly 140 people had already suffered due to this alleged conspiracy.

Mamata Banerjee said, “If people’s voting rights are taken away, I will not remain silent. If required, I will go to court and oppose it. If permitted, I will fight for people’s rights not as a lawyer but as a common citizen. I have all the documents and evidence related to the SIR safely preserved. The voter list shows living people as deceased.”

The Chief Minister also criticised the central leadership, stating, “They come to Singur and read from teleprompters, claiming what they will do for Bengal. For four years, they have not provided funds for housing projects or road construction in the state.”

Expressing her resolve, she added, “Put me in jail or shoot me, it does not matter. If you imprison me, mothers, sisters, and farmers will respond.”

Banerjee expressed her fondness for Singur, recalling, “Singur is my favourite place. I have spent a long time on this land. I promised the farmers their land back, and I fulfilled that promise. The soil of Singur gave me victory.”

She also announced the establishment of an agricultural industrial park on eight acres of land in Singur, where agriculture and industry will operate together. She mentioned that online retailers Amazon and Flipkart are constructing large warehouses in Singur, with a private industrial park planned on 77 acres of land.

Remembering the victims of the recent fire incident at Anandpur warehouses, Banerjee announced jobs for the families of the deceased. She said, “Some of our friends lost their lives while working in a private company. We are providing compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased. The Momo Company and Decorators Company are giving Rs 5 lakh each. I have instructed the police to provide a job to one member of each deceased’s family as citizen volunteers.”
