Mamata Banerjee Accused of Using Special Intensive Review as Election Agenda by Sukanta Majumdar

Kolkata, April 5: Central Minister Sukanta Majumdar criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government on Sunday. He accused TMC leader and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of turning the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the voter list into an electoral agenda. He claimed that West Bengal is reverting to conditions reminiscent of 1946 or even earlier.

In a conversation, Majumdar emphasized that the states conducting the SIR are not all governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He cited Kerala and Tamil Nadu as examples, asserting that no issues have arisen there.

Referring to West Bengal, he stated that the problem exists solely in one state. This naturally raises the question of whether the issue lies with the SIR or within the state itself.

Majumdar held Chief Minister Banerjee responsible, alleging that she has made the SIR a political issue in Bengal. He claimed she aims to divert attention from corruption, unemployment, and violence against women.

The TMC has frequently accused the Election Commission of bias. Responding to this, Minister Majumdar stated that the Election Commission conducts elections independently. He asserted that the TMC is not accustomed to independent administration, suggesting that under TMC rule, the administration becomes a servant of the party.

He insisted that if the TMC had solid evidence or information against the Election Commission, the courts would rule in their favor.

Majumdar also referenced the Malda incident, where judicial officials were allegedly taken hostage. He stated that the TMC’s goons in Bengal must be shown the power of the Indian Constitution.

He further expressed concern that Bengal is regressing to conditions seen in 1946, warning that new figures reminiscent of Jinnah are emerging. The partition of Bengal occurred after 1946; he questioned what might happen next.

Additionally, the BJP leader raised the issue of illegal immigration due to Bengal’s open border with Bangladesh.
