New Delhi, May 20: Significant progress has been made in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, with the successful completion of a crucial steel bridge in Bharuch district, Gujarat. The 330-meter-long steel bridge, located near Tralasi village, saw its 130-meter span launched on May 16. Currently, 230 meters of the bridge have been completed.
This bridge crosses the Surat-Vadodara section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. It features three spans, including a continuous extension of 100 meters plus 130 meters, and a simply supported extension of 100 meters. The 130-meter extension weighs approximately 2,900 metric tons and was constructed on temporary trestles at a height of about 14 meters, using two semi-automatic jacks for installation.
Previously, in March 2026, a 100-meter simply supported extension weighing 1,500 metric tons was installed on-site. The remaining 100-meter continuous extension, weighing around 1,600 metric tons, will be installed soon. Once completed, the total weight of the bridge will be approximately 6,100 metric tons, with a width of 15.5 meters and a height of about 18 meters.
The steel bridge was manufactured at a factory in Umargaon, Gujarat, designed with a lifespan of 100 years in mind. The construction utilized 121,373 high-strength bolts, specialized painting, and metallic bearings.
Traffic management has been meticulously handled to ensure minimal disruption to freight train operations. So far, 14 out of the 17 steel bridges planned for the bullet train project in Gujarat have been completed. The overall plan includes the construction of 28 steel bridges for the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor. Such achievements are crucial steps toward the timely completion of the project.
