
Ballia, July 19: The police in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, have made significant strides against an inter-state vehicle theft gang, arresting five suspects following a confrontation. One of the accused sustained injuries during the police response and has been hospitalized for treatment. Further investigations are underway.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjay Verma reported that late at night, the Baharia police received a tip-off about gang members planning to sell stolen vehicles and other goods while heading towards Bihar. Acting swiftly, the police set up a blockade near Kola Bazarai to intercept the suspects.
According to ASP Sanjay Verma, the suspects opened fire on the police team with the intent to kill as they were cornered. In response, the police used minimal force for self-defense, resulting in one suspect being shot in the leg. The other four accomplices were apprehended at the scene.
The injured suspect identified himself as Hemant Singh from Kudari, Garhwar. The other arrested individuals have been named as Anuj Upadhyay, Dinesh Srivastava, Akash Singh, and Jai Kumar. Initial interrogations revealed that the suspects admitted to stealing several vehicles from various police jurisdictions in the district and other locations. The police are now investigating their criminal history and potential networks operating in other states.
Authorities recovered an illegal firearm, a live cartridge, a spent cartridge, eleven stolen motorcycles, a tractor-trailer, and other stolen items from the suspects.
Hemant Singh was promptly sent to a community health center for treatment of his injuries. The police have filed cases against all suspects under relevant sections of the law and are conducting thorough interrogations.
