Jammu, July 19: Heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir has led to severe conditions across several districts, particularly in Poonch. The downpour has caused significant destruction.
In Poonch, flooding in the Pulsty River has swept away two shops, a flour mill, and a vehicle service station, resulting in numerous vehicles being carried away. An 18-year-old boy lost his life when a house collapsed in the Sangleyani village of Surankote tehsil, while eight others remain trapped inside. In the Nuna Bandi village, another house collapse resulted in the death of a woman, with three others sustaining injuries. Landslides triggered by the heavy rains have blocked most roads in the district.
Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, addressed the situation on the social media platform X, stating, “I have spoken with senior officials and assessed the conditions in Rajouri and Poonch, which have been affected by continuous rain and sudden flooding. The civil administration, police, army, SDRF, and local volunteers are actively working on the ground in Rajouri.”
He further noted, “Affected families have been relocated to safe areas. All departments are on high alert and prioritizing relief and repair work. I urge residents to remain calm and follow official updates. I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and property in the Haveli and Surankote areas of Rajouri and Poonch. My condolences are with the grieving families.”
Manoj Sinha added, “The heavy rains have also damaged several homes in Rajouri and Poonch. I have instructed officials to provide immediate assistance to all affected families and ensure that emergency teams are fully prepared for any situation.”
