Tehran, July 19: Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, announced that the country has ceased fulfilling its responsibilities under the peace agreement with the United States. He stated that Washington has violated its commitments under the deal.
In an interview with state-run IRIB TV, Gharibabadi emphasized that the US has effectively broken or annulled all its obligations. He noted that Iran is now focused on self-defense, with no current news of negotiations.
He remarked, “Our primary challenge is to defend the nation robustly. The Americans have already received a response indicating that their aggressive actions will yield no results. If they are wise, they should choose a different approach.”
Meanwhile, the US Central Command reported on social media that, as of Saturday evening, the American military had initiated new airstrikes against Iran. These strikes aim to diminish Iran’s capacity to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and to retaliate against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which attacked US troops in Jordan the previous night.
The Central Command revealed that two US soldiers were killed and one is missing in the recent actions against Iran. This marks the first American military casualty from Iranian fire since March.
On July 17, two US service members were killed while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan. Additionally, one service member remains unaccounted for. Four other US service members were medically evacuated to a hospital in Jordan but have since been released, while others sustained minor injuries and have returned to duty.
Regarding the identification of the fallen soldiers, the military stated that details will not be publicly disclosed until 24 hours after their families have been informed.
US President Donald Trump expressed sorrow over the soldiers’ deaths, stating, “It is disheartening to witness such losses. They were martyred while serving our country.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also shared his condolences on social media, saying, “God bless you, heroes. Their sacrifice strengthens our resolve.”
The IRGC claimed responsibility for the attacks on the US military base in Al-Azraq, Jordan, asserting that several aircraft were completely destroyed in the strikes, which involved both missiles and drones.
According to the Xinhua news agency, the US has conducted multiple attacks on military bases and facilities in Iran’s southern provinces in recent weeks, claiming the objective was to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
In retaliation, Iran has targeted US military bases and locations in several Gulf countries and Jordan with missile and drone strikes.
