Major Milestone Achieved in Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project

Ahmedabad, April 8: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has reached a significant milestone with the successful installation of a beam weighing 1,360 metric tons. This achievement was announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday.

The beam was installed in the Maninagar area of Gujarat. In a post on the social media platform X, Minister Vaishnaw stated that one of the heaviest beams for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project was successfully placed in just 3.5 hours.

The beam measures 34 meters in length, with a cross-section of 5.5 meters wide and 4.5 meters tall. Officials revealed that there are plans to install a total of five such beams near the Maninagar railway station. Each beam is prefabricated on-site and installed as a single heavy unit.

An official statement noted, “The entire launching process was completed in a remarkably short time of approximately three and a half hours, adhering to strict safety standards.” This operation was conducted in coordination with Indian Railways, ensuring that traffic and electricity were completely halted.

The lifting operation utilized a crawler crane with a capacity of 2,200 metric tons, supported by a 260-ton standby crane, an 80-ton crane, a man lifter, and an anchoring frame with a lifter beam system. To safely handle the heavy load, prestressed Macloy bars with a diameter of 75 mm, lifting beams, and heavy-duty slings were employed.

Officials highlighted the engineering challenges involved, stating, “This operation faced numerous engineering hurdles, including lifting an ultra-heavy load of approximately 1,360 metric tons—one of the heaviest loads ever handled on Indian Railways infrastructure—while also needing to complete the entire construction work within a limited timeframe.”

Additional complexities arose due to limited workspace, overhead equipment, and multiple active railway lines, necessitating precise installation at a height of around 15 meters.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, officially known as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, is a 508-kilometer high-speed line connecting Mumbai in Maharashtra to Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

Implemented by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) with technical and financial assistance from Japan, this project is designed for trains operating at speeds of up to 320 km/h. The aim is to commence phased operations by 2027, with full completion expected by around 2028.
