Raigarh, April 15: The district administration has taken serious action following a catastrophic boiler accident at Vedanta Power Limited, located in the Singhitrai village of the Dabhra tehsil in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district. Under the directives of Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, Collector and District Magistrate Amrit Vikas Topno has issued orders for a magistrate-level inquiry in accordance with Section 196 of the Indian National Disaster Management Act-2023. The responsibility for the investigation has been assigned to Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vinay Kumar Kashyap of Dabhra.
On April 14, 2026, a significant incident occurred in Boiler Unit-1 of the plant due to a technical malfunction in the joint of a water supply pipe connected to the steam pipe. A total of 34 workers were affected by this accident, with 12 fatalities reported. The injured workers are currently receiving treatment at Fortis Jindal Hospital, Apex Hospital, and Balaji Metro Hospital in Raigarh.
The issued orders specify that the investigation will clarify when, how, and under what circumstances the accident occurred. Additionally, it will verify the identities of the workers present at the site during the incident, as well as those of the deceased and injured. A detailed analysis of the causes leading to the accident will also be conducted.
Furthermore, the Assistant Director of Industrial Health and Safety (District Janjgir-Champa and Sakti) will review inspections conducted at the plant from the time production began until the accident occurred. The investigation will also assess whether any deficiencies were previously identified and what actions were taken in response.
The investigating officer has been instructed to determine whether the accident was caused by technical issues or human error, and to identify the individuals or organizations responsible. Recommendations to prevent future occurrences of such incidents will also be included in the report. The administration has mandated that the investigating officer complete the inquiry and submit a comprehensive report within 30 days.
