Kolkata, April 15: Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Wednesday that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government has rejected three proposals to discuss the issues faced by residents of the Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong hills over the past year and a half.
Shah was scheduled to hold a public meeting at Lebong Ground in Darjeeling on Wednesday morning. However, due to inclement weather, his helicopter could not land, leading to the broadcast of a seven-minute video message instead.
In his message, Shah expressed disappointment that Banerjee had not sent any representative to New Delhi to discuss the concerns of the hill residents and the demands of the Gorkhas. He accused her of not wanting justice and rightful recognition for the Gorkhas living in Darjeeling.
He reassured the audience, stating that once the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forms the government in the state on May 5, addressing the problems of the Gorkhas will be their top priority. He promised that all complaints and cases filed against the Gorkhas related to the Gorkhaland movement would be withdrawn.
Shah expressed regret for not being able to attend the meeting and announced that he would return to Sukna in Darjeeling on April 21, the last day of campaigning for the first phase of elections on April 23. He noted that his recent travels in the state have convinced him that the BJP is poised for victory in West Bengal this time. He concluded by stating that the days of illegal immigration, corruption, and lawlessness will come to an end.
