New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani arrived in New Delhi on September 12 to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit. He was welcomed at the airport by Aseem Mahajan, the Additional Secretary for Gulf Affairs at the Ministry of External Affairs.
The Ministry of External Affairs expressed its warm welcome to Al Zayani via a post on the social media platform X. It stated that his attendance at the summit, where he also serves as the current President of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), would enhance cooperation between India and the GCC.
India is hosting the two-day BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, starting Saturday. Leaders from member and partner countries, as well as representatives from invited nations, are participating in the event.
The theme of India’s BRICS presidency focuses on resilience, innovation, collaboration, and sustainability. This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s people-centered approach, reflecting the spirit of “Humanity First.”
BRICS comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. Its partner nations include Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
Earlier on Saturday, leaders from BRICS nations participated in a session at Bharat Mandapam, discussing the topic of “Strengthening Inclusive Global Governance and Multilateralism.”
During the summit, Prime Minister Modi announced the unanimous adoption of the “New Delhi Declaration 2026.” He also unveiled two postage stamps commemorating the 20th anniversary of BRICS.
In his closing remarks, Modi emphasized that the New Delhi Declaration provides a clear direction for shared resolve and that it is the responsibility of all nations to turn these proposals into tangible outcomes.
He noted that discussions among BRICS leaders addressed significant regional and global issues, as well as priorities for enhancing BRICS cooperation. Modi described the discussions as meaningful and constructive.
The Prime Minister asserted that the changing global landscape cannot be managed through outdated institutions. He underscored the need for improvements in representation, accountability, and rule-making processes.
Modi called for equal participation in the development of future technologies and associated regulations for the Global South.
During the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Modi was joined by leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, Iranian President Masoud Pezheshkian, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira in a tree-planting ceremony in New Delhi.
