
New Delhi, August 13: Major General Sunil Kumar Rajdhan (Retd), a valiant warrior of the Indian Army, passed away on Thursday. His demise has left a wave of sorrow among the Indian defense forces. Major General Rajdhan was honored with the Kirti Chakra and the Distinguished Service Medal for his exceptional service.
As a brave officer of the 7th Battalion, Parachute Regiment (7 Para SF), he made a significant mark in military history during an anti-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 1994. During this operation, terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba took several young women hostage. At that time, Lieutenant Colonel Sunil Kumar Rajdhan led the mission and courageously eliminated two terrorists.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen during the operation, severely injuring his spine. Despite his grave injuries, he displayed remarkable bravery, neutralizing the remaining threats and ensuring the safe rescue of the hostages.
Rajdhan refused immediate medical evacuation and remained on the front lines until the mission was completed. For his extraordinary valor, he was awarded the Kirti Chakra, the second-highest peacetime gallantry award in India.
Due to his severe injuries, he became paralyzed from the waist down, but he never allowed his physical limitations to hinder his determination. Challenging his disability with unwavering willpower, Major General Rajdhan achieved another historic milestone by becoming the first general officer in the Indian Army to use a wheelchair.
He continued to serve the nation, concluding his active military career at the Integrated Defence Staff headquarters, where he conducted significant and valuable research work.
Major General Sunil Kumar Rajdhan’s life exemplifies the highest dedication, courage, and commitment to Indian military traditions. His indomitable spirit and dedication to the nation will continue to inspire future generations of soldiers and citizens.
The Indian defense forces expressed condolences to the grieving family, praying for peace for the departed soul and strength for the family to endure this immense loss.
